Salmon, Trout & Coarse Angling On the Blackwater At Cappoquin

Cappoquin is a small town on the N72, 20 minutes drive from Newtown Farm Bed & Breakfast. The freshwater here is backed up by the tide and fishing is best when the water is either rising or falling. Roach and Dace fishing is good throughout the year, but they are at their best in the autumn and spring.

The river is tidal here and this movement of water affects the fishing. Shoals of good Roach and Dace are located in many sections of the river where access is good.

Special Note: The River Blackwater is a mixed fishery, holding Salmon and Trout. Fishing for coarse fish is controlled by the Cappoquin Coarse Angling Club by arrangement with Lismore Estates. Coarse anglers must note that fishing is restricted to the area between the Trageen (Glenribbon Bridge) to the lay-by on the Youghal Road along both banks.

Sea Angling Off The Waterford Coast

At Dungarvan where the River Colligan meets the sea, a safe harbour has been created, out of which charter boats operate. This area is the most easterly Blue Shark fishery in Ireland. There is also famous Flounder fishing in the estuary and some Bass locally. Helvick Head, to the west of Dungarvan, seems to deflect the North Atlantic Drift offshore and species like Blue Shark follow it. More information on sea angling from Dungarvan can be had from Dungarvan Charter Boats.

The stretch of coast between Helvick and Ardmore is largely inaccessible. But once you get to Ardmore things change quite dramatically. After all, this is where in April 1977 an English angler took Southern Region rod-caught record Bass - 17 lbs - from the shores of Whiting Bay! More information on sea angling from Ardmore can be had from Ardmore Diving.

More Information On Fishing

The Southern Regional Fisheries Board has a very detailed web site that has lots of information on fishing in the Waterford region. The region is the proud home to some of the best trout, salmon, coarse and sea angling in Ireland.

For the game angler there is the famous River Blackwater and its many salmon, the upper reaches and the main channel of the Suir River for the trout angler and many streams for those who pursue sea-trout.

The sea angler has a multitude of shore marks (beach and rock), to choose from, where much of the nation's best bass angling can be had. The boat fishing from this coast is second to none.

The coarse angler has many waters to choose from; the Barrow Line line has many bream and hybrids and the Blackwater is justly regarded as a good roach and dace fishery.
